Established in the late 1990’s, Total Fitness has established itself as the leading health club in the North of England and Wales with over 95,000 members.
The company has 17 gym sites across the region and over 500 employees. Its head office is based, along with its biggest gym, in Wilmslow where the team manages the day-to-day running of all the health clubs including marketing, membership and technology.
David Atkinson, Head of Technology at Total Fitness, joined the company in 2015 to overhaul the current infrastructure and bring the company up to date with today’s technology: “Total Fitness was struggling on an old, legacy copper-based WAN when I joined, it was unreliable and out of date and there was no way we could run the business from that.”

M247 migrated Total Fitness’s existing WAN onto a new, 17-site MPLS network that included every one of its health clubs. This fully managed solution, which utilises both wireless and fibre connectivity, includes colocation and managed Wi-Fi for use at all the sites by members, patrons and staff.
M247’s MPLS service provides a secure, resilient platform for sharing applications and information between multiple sites and is monitored and managed by our industry-leading team of MPLS specialists. The colocation solution, combined with managed MPLS, allows Total Fitness to install new hardware and enjoy hitherto unprecedented bandwidths on completely uncontended access circuits, and in doing so improve its service offering to end customers.
The Wilmslow head office and gym was the first site to be brought onto the network and the first to launch Wi-Fi to its members.
