New China security laws announced this month are causing businesses to search for alternative server solutions outside of Hong Kong.
The new rules essentially force internet service providers and businesses to turn over user data to the authorities without a warrant or face life sentence in prison.
Critics warn that because of the new regulations, user privacy could be compromised, and businesses are left at risk over protecting customer data.
Already large scale server providers are announcing their intention to shut down their Hong Kong based operations claiming the law impedes their operating efficiently and jeopardises their ability to protect customers.
Businesses are also choosing to move their hosting from Hong Kong to other locations such as Singapore and the US to ensure they retain data privacy from their business and their customers.
