Privately owned Laing O’Rourke is an internationally focussed engineering enterprise with world class capabilities spanning the entire client value chain.
The business origins stretch from 1848 before the Laing O’Rourke brand was officially established in the UK in 2001. Now a multinational organisation with operations in Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia, delivering some of the most iconic constructions in the world.
Their sectors include buildings, transport and power, through to water and utilities as well as mining and natural resources. Some of their notable projects include the, London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, Atlantis The Palm in Dubai and the Manchester Town Hall Complex.
The challenge
Laing O’Rourke’s day to day construction is never in one place for long. Their main challenge was to deliver IT infrastructures to temporary sites across the UK, this connectivity needed to be flexible and scalable so it could be moved from site to site when needed.

We have been finding it increasingly difficult to work within the confines of traditional connectivity providers on our construction sites. We need connectivity to be readily available to us without commitment to long contracts being an issue. I am responsible for delivery of IT infrastructure for all our construction sites in the North, the Midlands and Scotland, we have many projects going on all at the same time so it is essential that the infrastructure does not let us down and delay completion. Fibre may not be an option for some of these sites as there is often too much disruption and we have to commit to a minimum contract length. Smaller construction projects can last from a couple of weeks to just a few months and for these we needed a provider who could deliver fast, flexible connectivity without the contract constraints.”
